Pregnancy

If Chlamydial infection is left untreated during pregnancy it may result in miscarriage or premature birth of the baby. It can be passed to the baby during the birth and (less commonly) before the baby is born. It may present as discharge from the baby's eye (conjunctivitis) or more seriously, pneumonia.

Pregnant and breast feeding mother’s who receive a positive result for Chlamydia can be offered treatment with antibiotics. Antibiotics will treat the current infection but do not prevent you from getting it again; therefore, it is advisable to attend for screening prior to the birth of the baby to ensure there hasn’t been any re-infection.
